Khufu's pyramid before digging out of the sand

For much of the nineteenth century, drifting desert sand lay heaped against the Great Pyramid of Khufu, concealing large portions of its base and ancient passages from view.

Explorers, engineers, and local laborers gradually cleared the accumulated sand, basket by basket, under the relentless Egyptian sun. As the dunes receded, massive limestone blocks emerged from centuries of burial, revealing the true scale of the monument. The excavation exposed entrances, surrounding structures, and stretches of the original foundation platform that had long been hidden. Dust filled the air as workers carved pathways through the deposits that had gathered over generations. By the end of these efforts, the Great Pyramid stood more fully revealed, allowing scholars to study one of humanity’s greatest architectural achievements in unprecedented detail.
