Did the forgotten pyramid built by Pharaoh Djedefre stand on the hill of Abu Rawash? Djedefre is, in any case, the only one whose pyramid has not been found. The area is known to have been the most advanced in the world 4,500 years ago. A causeway from that time, the longest of its kind, leads up the hill and can be seen in satellite images. There was a wide canal to the Nile, branching off in several places. Through these canals, granite blocks were transported from 1,000 km away. Limestone was available nearby, and it is estimated that 325,000 tons were needed.

At the site of the present-day village of Abu Rawash, about 10 km west of Cairo and the Nile, excavations suggest a settlement housing 6,000 workers. The area had a sewer system and the world’s first paved street.
