Aeolipile Hero's engine

 

When heated, steam escapes through the nozzles, creating thrust that causes the sphere to rotate. This demonstrates the principle of jet propulsion and the conversion of thermal energy to motion. It is regarded as the earliest known example of a steam motor or rotary reaction engine.
