Milk Silos and their Design
Hygienic Construction
- Hygienic surface material — The silo is manufactured from food‑grade stainless steel (typically AISI 304 or 316), with polished internal surfaces to inhibit bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. - Seamless internal geometry — All internal corners are radiused and welds ground flush to ensure residue‑free cleaning. - CIP cleaning system — Fixed spray heads provide uniform distribution of cleaning agents across the entire internal surface during CIP cycles.
Temperature Control
- Insulated jacket — The silo is thermally insulated (commonly with polyurethane foam) to maintain milk at 2–4 °C. - Cooling channels — Integrated cooling plates or pipework within the jacket ensure even heat transfer across the vessel wall. - Temperature monitoring — Sensors and automated control prevent temperature excursions beyond critical limits.
Structural Design
- Volume sizing — Typical capacities range from 10 to 100 m³, selected according to production throughput and milk collection intervals. - Load calculations — The structure is designed for full‑load hydrostatic pressure, wind loading and, in Nordic climates, significant snow loading. - Foundation design — A reinforced concrete foundation distributes loads evenly and prevents distortion of the silo shell.
Process Interfaces and Operability
- Filling and discharge lines — Pipework is designed for laminar flow and full CIP compatibility, minimising dead legs. - Agitation system — A slow, uniform agitator prevents cream separation without imposing excessive mechanical stress on the milk. - Access and instrumentation — Inspection hatches, level sensors and sampling points are positioned for hygienic and ergonomic operation.
